1. What do I do about my citation?

Action must be taken on a citation within 14 days from the date of violation. Taking action includes paying the required bail or scheduling an appointment to appear in Court to enter a plea or make payment arrangements.

Failure to take action will result in a late fee being added. In addition, a warrant for your arrest may be issued.

2. Do I have to see the judge?

Most moving and non-moving violations do not require a court appearance. 

Violations That Require an Appearance

• The most common traffic violations that do require a court appearance are:
  • Driving license violations
  • No proof of insurance
  • Speeding in a school zone
• All animal control and other city ordinance violations, as well as the majority of criminal charges, do require a court appearance.
• If you were involved in a criminal action for which you were booked or if a police report was written, you may be summoned to court to answer to the charges. 
  • You may contact the Court, and the clerks will inform you if your appearance is required.

3. Will the violation go on my driving record?

All moving violation and driver license violation convictions are sent to the Driver License Division.

4. Does Syracuse City have traffic school?

If you are interested in Traffic School, you must schedule a court appointment to find out if you qualify for traffic school.  Traffic School ordered by Syracuse City is done via Driving Basics. Read information about scheduling court appointments.

5. How can I keep this charge off of my driving record?

If you wish to keep a conviction from causing points to be added to your driver's license, you must schedule a court appointment for an arraignment and discuss these options with the City Prosecutor. Find out how to schedule a court appointment.

6. Does the Court report my citation to my insurance company?

No. The Court reports moving violations to Utah Driver License Division only. However, many insurance companies do random checks and, for a fee, they can obtain a copy of your driver history from the Driver License Division.

7. How much will my citation cost?

Syracuse City follows the recommended bail schedule set by the State of Utah.

Speeding Violations

Violation	Fee
0 to 10 miles per hour over	$120
11 to 15 miles per hour over	$150
16 to 20 miles per hour over	$200
21 to 25 miles per hour over	$270
26 to 30 miles per hour over	$370

Violations over 30 Miles Per Hour

Anything above 30 miles per hour over the speed limit requires a Court appearance and the person cited must schedule an appointment with the Judge. 

Violations in Construction Zones

Bail amounts on all the above are doubled if the violation occurs in a construction zone.

Other Moving Vehicle Violations

The amount is $120 for the following violations:

• Disobeying traffic control
• Failure to reduce speed
• Failure to stop
• Failure to yield
• Improper lane change
• Improper lookout
• Negligent collision

If there was an accident, a $30 surcharge is added.

Other Types of Violations

• For expired registration or no valid driver’s license, the bail amount is $50. This bail will be reduced to $40 with a copy of a valid registration or valid driver’s license.
• Failure to wear is seatbelt is $60.

8. How do I pay for my citation?

Payments are accepted online, by mail or in person at the court (1979 W 1900 S).

To pay online, visit Xpress Bill Pay, a safe, secure site for online payments. You will need your citation or case number in order to process your payment. The City accepts Visa and Mastercard.

Payments by Mail

When paying by mail, please include a copy of your citation with your payment. Your check or money order should be made payable to Syracuse Court and mailed to:

9. What types of charges can I pay online?

Types of Charges to Pay Online

Online payments may be made to Syracuse Justice Court for the following charges:

• Minor equipment violations
• Moving traffic violations, including speeding
• No driver’s license
• No registration

• Criminal Charges
• Driving on Suspension or Revocation
• Mandatory Court Appearances
• Minor Traffic Violations
• No Insurance
• Speeding in a School Zone

10. Does Syracuse Court allow community service in lieu of paying a fine?

If you are interested in community service, you must schedule an appointment to speak with the Judge. All community service must be done through Syracuse City. If community service is approved by the Judge, email Jody Peeters.
